There are two main types of automatic fire detection and alarm system specifications.
BS 5839-1: 2025 is adopted for non-domestic premises, and BS 5839-6- 2019 for domestic. These are commonly and more simply referred to as Part 1 or Part 6 systems.
The testing & inspection, servicing and maintenance frequencies are different for Part 1 & Part 6 systems.
The testing frequency for a Part 1 system is weekly, and for a Part 6 system monthly. All testing should be recorded, with any defects noted and actioned.
The inspection, servicing and maintenance frequency for a Part 1 system is 6 and 12 monthly, whereas for a Part 6 system it is based on the fire risk assessment, or the manufacturers recommendations, or for sheltered housing every 12 months.
To complicate matters, certain Part 6 systems are installed to the requirements of a Part 1 system, and therefore testing & inspection, servicing and maintenance align to the more demanding frequencies of Part 1.
One can also find Part 6 domestic systems in non-domestic premises.
Confusion therefore can arise for the Responsible Person as to the type of automatic fire detection and alarm system installed system and the testing and inspection, servicing and maintenance regimes.
