If your premises is provided with emergency lighting, then you must ensure that it is always in working order.
Emergency lighting should be tested on a monthly basis, and inspected, serviced and maintained annually, in accordance with the relevant British Standard – BS 5266 Emergency Lighting.
The monthly test, often referred to as a 'flick test', involves nothing more than using either the dedicated emergency test key switches (fish key switches), where provided, or isolating the relevant lighting circuit at the distribution board, ensuring all installed emergency lights illuminate.
The power should then be restored, records completed, with any defects noted and actioned.
Additionally, the emergency lighting should be subjected to a full duration 3 hour discharge test annually, by a competent contractor.
On completion a certificate will be issued, which should be kept for records. Any defects should be actioned as soon as possible.
